In the first half of this year, China's information consumption reached 2.07 trillion yuan, marking a 20% year-on-year growth. This rapid expansion highlights how information consumption has become a key driver for stimulating consumption, boosting domestic demand, and supporting economic growth. Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Shang Bing, emphasized this during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2013 China Internet Conference on the 13th. Shang Bing noted that in recent years, with the accelerated development of mobile internet, big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, China’s internet industry has witnessed significant progress. He highlighted three major trends shaping the sector today. First, mobile internet is expanding rapidly. In the first half of the year, smartphone shipments reached 214 million units, a 120% increase compared to the previous year. The number of internet users in China hit 550 million, with 464 million using mobile internet—nearly 80% of the total. The swift development across the entire mobile internet ecosystem, including terminals, platforms, applications, and services, has continuously given rise to new business models and forms, reshaping daily life and influencing various industries. Second, web applications are becoming more diverse. Instant messaging and social networking continue to grow rapidly, while entertainment and leisure apps are also seeing steady expansion. New services such as mobile payments and location-based solutions are emerging, supported by innovations in mobile internet, IoT, and cloud computing. The internet is now deeply embedded in people’s lives, meeting a wide range of consumer needs. Third, the growth of information consumption is being driven steadily. With the fast development of the internet, both information consumption and e-commerce have expanded significantly. In the first half of the year, information consumption reached 2.07 trillion yuan, up 20%, while e-commerce transactions exceeded 4.98 trillion yuan, rising 4% year-on-year. Additionally, the construction of the next-generation internet has made notable progress. As of the end of June, China ranked second globally in IPv6 address allocation. University campus networks are fully equipped with IPv6, and 14 provinces and 20 cities have started network upgrades. Over 30 internet companies have also upgraded their websites and launched related mobile services. Looking ahead, Shang Bing believes that government departments should play a leading role by strengthening laws and regulations related to cybersecurity, data protection, and personal privacy. Efforts should also be made to combat spam, viruses, malicious software, and online rumors, aiming to create a cleaner and safer online environment for users.
