According to a paper published on ScienceAdvances, the researchers first determined the diameter and arrangement of nanopores on butterfly wings by scanning electron microscopy, and then used computer simulations to analyze the absorbance of various apertures. The study found that, at different wavelengths and different angles of incident light, compared with the periodic arrangement of single nanoholes, the irregular holes of the red butterfly swallowtail have a more stable light absorption rate.

As a result, the researchers mimicked this structure on the wing of the butterfly and introduced irregular positioning holes ranging in diameter from 133 nm to 343 nm in the silicon absorber layer of the thin-film solar cell. Afterwards, the absorbance was analyzed: Compared with the smooth surface, the absorptivity of the battery against vertical incident light increased by 97% and continued to rise; when the incident angle was 50°, the absorbance reached 207%.

Although the results of the study are very satisfactory, Guillaume Gomard of the Institute of Microstructure Technology of the institute said: “200% is the limit of efficiency that can theoretically be increased considering the influence of other factors. In fact, the efficiency of solar photovoltaic systems cannot improve so much.
