Dalian Institute of Chemicals Research progresses in the research of bromine-based flow battery electrode materials

Recently, Zhang Huamin and Li Pixian, research fellows of the Department of Energy Storage Technology of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, used the “hole size screening effect” to immobilize bromine and designed and prepared a cage-like porous carbon material with both high activity and solid bromine function. Its application in zinc bromide flow batteries has been realized. The relevant research results were published in Advanced Materials (DOI:10.1002/adma.201605815).

Due to the higher electrode potential and lower cost of Br2/Br-redox couples, bromine-based flow batteries have become one of the research hotspots. The low Br2/Br-reactivity and cross-blending of bromine are key challenges for bromine-based flow batteries.

The research team designed a class of hollow, porous nano-cage materials with a pore size between the bromide ion and the complexed bromine; after the electrochemical reaction of the bromide ion inside the cage, using the "hole size screening effect" "Fixed" inside, thus effectively inhibiting cross-contamination of bromine. The single cell assembled with this material has a Coulomb efficiency of 98% and an energy efficiency of 81% under a charge and discharge condition of 80 mA/cm2. This work provides new ideas for the design and preparation of bromine-based flow battery electrode materials.
