The research team of the Graduate School of Osaka University has collaborated with Japanese food and chemical companies to develop marine biodegradable plastics by combining common biomass such as starch and cellulose. After mixing starch and cellulose with their self-developed technology, the starch's water resistance is greatly improved, and the obtained film-like composite material shows excellent water resistance and high strength, and it has high biodegradability in seawater. The film obtained by this technology is transparent in color and more than twice as strong as general-purpose plastics. In addition, after being immersed in seawater for one month, the film decomposes, and small holes are covered on the surface, and many fungi adhere to the holes. This indicates that a biofilm is formed on the surface of the film, and enzymes metabolized by the biofilm promote the biodegradation of the film. If this technology can be put into practical use, the use of cheap starch and cellulose that are abundant on the earth can build a material cycle and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
