Although we have heard of light-activated germicidal coatings, they usually require ultraviolet light or high-intensity light. However, a new antibacterial coating can be activated by low-intensity light normally used in offices or waiting rooms. The coating was developed by a team led by University College London scientists and borrowed from previous research. The antibacterial coating consists of tiny chemically modified gold clusters embedded in a polymer and a dye called crystal violet.

Although the latter requires exposure to ultraviolet light or very strong light, it has previously been shown to kill harmful bacteria alone. This causes it to produce a chemical reaction type of oxygen-called reactive oxygen species (reactive oxygen species), the latter fatally destroys the DNA and protective membrane of microorganisms.

Neither type of light is particularly practical or unobtrusive for use in public places, and ultraviolet light is harmful to humans. However, due to the addition of gold, the dye in the new coating is triggered to produce hydrogen peroxide when exposed to ambient light. In laboratory tests, the surface is covered with a coating, inoculated with E. coli or Staphylococcus aureus, and then exposed to light with an average intensity of only 312 lux-in contrast, other coatings require at least 3000 lux to function effect. A large number of Staphylococcus aureus were killed within 6 hours, and E. coli also decreased significantly after 24 hours. However, there was no reduction in bacteria on the control surface where the coating containing polymer and dye but no gold was applied.

Professor Asterios Gavriilidis, senior author of the research paper, said: "The gold clusters in the coating are the key to the production of hydrogen peroxide. Given that these clusters contain only 25 gold atoms, compared to similar coatings, this rare There are very few metals, which makes our coatings attractive for a wide range of applications. "

The paper was published in the journal Nature Communications this week.
