On April 8, new findings revealed that several popular Chinese car models, including Changan Yuexiang, Mitsubishi Outlander, Chevrolet Aveo Europe, and Changan Suzuki SX4, have been found to contain high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of known carcinogens. Specifically, the steering wheel of the Changan Yuexiang was found to contain 23.5 mg/Kg of PAHs, far exceeding the EU and German GS safety standards for consumer products.
The German GS standard sets strict limits on PAHs in materials that come into contact with adult skin, capping it at 10 mg/Kg or less. This means that if a person's skin is exposed to such materials for more than 30 seconds, the level must not exceed this threshold—except for items used by children under three years old or those placed in the mouth. The latest test report from the media shows that the Changan Yuexiang’s steering wheel exceeded the EU Class II limit by over two times. If measured against the stricter Class I standard, the result was over 100 times higher than allowed.
In an effort to verify these findings, the media purchased steering wheels from the Suzuki SX4 and Chevrolet Aveo Europe models, which are sold in both China and Europe, and sent them to a domestic third-party testing agency. The results showed that the steering wheels of these models purchased in Germany contained no detectable PAHs. However, when testing the first batch of locally produced Suzuki Tianyu SX4 and Shanghai GM Chevrolet Aveo Europe models, PAHs were detected in both, with levels of 6.4 mg/Kg and 7.0 mg/Kg respectively.
Experts from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences note that PAHs are naturally present in the environment but have become a growing concern in automotive products. “According to current research, prolonged exposure to PAHs through skin contact or inhalation can significantly increase the risk of cancer,†they said. As consumers become more aware of health risks, such findings may prompt stricter regulations and greater transparency from manufacturers.
