Abstract China is rich in unconventional energy resources, particularly in the fields of combustible ice and shale gas. These energy sources hold great potential to reshape the country’s future energy landscape. Combustible ice, also known as methane hydrate, is found in large quantities across several regions, including the South China Sea, the East China Sea, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the permafrost areas in Northeast China. According to preliminary estimates, China's combustible ice reserves are approximately 64.97 trillion cubic meters, with additional significant deposits in other regions, totaling around 12.5 trillion cubic meters. The northern slope of the South China Sea alone contains about 18.5 billion tons of oil equivalent, which is six times the proven oil and gas reserves from deepwater exploration in the same area. Globally, combustible ice reserves are estimated at 10 trillion tons, enough to meet human energy demands for over a millennium.
China's shale gas resources are also vast. According to data released by the Ministry of Land and Resources in March last year, the geological potential of shale gas on the mainland is 134.42 trillion cubic meters, with recoverable reserves estimated at 25.08 trillion cubic meters (excluding the Qinghai-Tibet region). This is comparable to conventional natural gas reserves. Key areas for future development include the Sichuan Basin, eastern and western Hubei, the Xiaoxiang region, the Ordos Basin, and the Tarim Basin. Under the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," the goal was to reach 600 billion cubic meters of proven shale gas reserves and 200 billion cubic meters of recoverable reserves by 2015, with an output of 6.5 billion cubic meters. By 2020, the target was to increase annual production to between 60 and 100 billion cubic meters. If this target is met, shale gas could significantly alter China's energy structure and become a crucial pillar of its energy supply.
