When choosing wallpaper, have you ever worried about it curling? Do you think all wallpapers tend to curl? Actually, not all types of wallpaper will curl — it depends largely on the material you choose.

Wallpaper materials are mainly divided into two categories: PVC-based and pure paper-based. In general, PVC wallpapers are more prone to curling compared to their natural counterparts.

The reason behind this is that PVC wallpapers are made from a combination of PVC and a paper backing. While they feel textured and durable, the layered structure can cause issues once applied to the wall. If the wall or the installation process introduces moisture, the paper base may expand while the PVC layer doesn’t. This mismatch in expansion leads to curling over time.

In addition, PVC wallpapers are more elastic when exposed to temperature changes. The paper backing, however, reacts less to these shifts. This difference in flexibility can cause the PVC to wrinkle or deform. Another downside is that PVC is not breathable. Moisture trapped during installation or from the wall itself gets stuck inside, like wearing a plastic coat. This can lead to bubbles, mold, or mildew under the right conditions.

On the other hand, natural wood pulp and fiber-based wallpapers are made from real wood fibers and are much more breathable. They expand and contract with humidity and temperature in a way that’s more consistent with the wall itself. This makes them less likely to curl, and they allow excess moisture to escape naturally, reducing the risk of bubbles or mold. If you're looking for a long-lasting, eco-friendly option, these natural wallpapers are definitely worth considering.
