Floating school in Nigeria

As water levels rise and flooding becomes a growing concern, a groundbreaking solution is taking shape in Lagos, Nigeria. A floating school is set to be launched in the city, offering an innovative way to address the challenges of rising tides and unstable land.

The "Makoko Floating School" is situated on the waters near the Marco Polo waterfront slum, designed and constructed by Dutch architects. The project makes use of locally sourced materials, with 16 wooden planks made from timber found in Lagos. These planks were assembled into a large rectangular base, and 256 plastic buckets were attached underneath to provide buoyancy. The sides of the structure are built with wood, forming sloped triangular columns that resemble traditional roof designs. The entire building is divided into three levels: one for classrooms, another for a playground, and a third for green space.

Designed to be energy-independent, the floating school uses solar panels installed on the sloped triangular sections to generate electricity. Additionally, rainwater collection systems are integrated into the design, allowing the school to store and reuse water for sanitation purposes. This eco-friendly approach ensures the school can function efficiently even in remote or challenging environments.

The school can accommodate up to 100 students and is a much-needed addition to the area, which currently has only one primary school. Local residents have embraced the project with enthusiasm, seeing it as a step toward a more sustainable future. The Makoko Floating School is expected to be completed by the end of this month. If all goes according to plan, it could eventually replace the makeshift homes in the slum and evolve into a full-fledged water-based community by the end of 2014. This initiative aims to provide a better living environment for approximately 100,000 people in the area, marking a significant shift in urban development in Lagos.
