The China Machine Tool Industry Association (referred to as the "General Meeting") held its Seventh Executive Directors' Extended Meeting (known as the "Board of Directors") and the Secretary-General's Working Conference in Beijing on June 6th to 7th, 2012. The main agenda included speeches from key industry leaders, economic reports, strategic development discussions, and updates on the association’s activities. Deputy Director Wang Weiming from the Equipment Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology delivered a keynote speech, highlighting the current challenges faced by China’s equipment industry. He pointed out that while there has been progress over the past decade, the sector still struggles with issues like low-end product overproduction, high dependency on imports for high-end products, and a lack of core competitiveness. He emphasized the need for innovation, stronger user engagement, and improved quality of machine tools to support long-term growth. Wang Liming, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General, presented an overview of the machine tool industry’s performance from January to October 2012. The industry achieved a total industrial output value of 576.67 billion yuan, showing an 11.1% increase, but profits dropped by 3.6% year-on-year. He noted the overall economic environment was challenging, with market demands shifting rapidly and production capacity not aligning with market needs. Despite this, he remained optimistic about the industry's future, predicting continued growth in 2013. Chen Huiren, Deputy Secretary-General, delivered a special report on the industry’s transformation and sustainable development. He emphasized that the shift toward higher-quality growth is necessary and inevitable. He highlighted the need for enterprises to focus on improving competitiveness, not just scale, and stressed the importance of innovation and long-term planning. Minister Yu Bin from the State Council’s Development Research Center provided insights into China’s economic outlook. He discussed the goals set by the 18th National Congress, including doubling GDP and income levels by 2020. He outlined five major challenges facing the economy, such as maintaining macroeconomic stability, managing financial risks, and promoting structural reforms. He also predicted a moderate recovery in 2013, with an expected GDP growth rate of around 7.5%. The meeting also covered preparations for the 2013 General Conference re-election, the implementation of key tasks by various branches, and improvements to the evaluation criteria for top-performing companies. Participants engaged in lively discussions, sharing experiences and offering suggestions for better strategies and inclusivity in the industry. Executive Vice President and Secretary-General Wang Liming concluded the meeting by urging all members to implement the conference’s decisions effectively and strengthen communication across all levels of the association. The event was considered a success, with valuable insights and actionable plans laid out for the future of the machine tool industry.
