Yantai to promote the use of solar insect killer next year The safety and quality of agricultural products have always been a top priority for farmers and officials alike. In Yantai, local authorities are taking significant steps to ensure that food production remains safe and sustainable. According to reports from a recent meeting, starting in January 2013, all county-level and municipal units will strictly follow pollution-free agricultural standards, banning the use of highly toxic and high-risk pesticides. As part of this initiative, solar-powered insecticidal lamps will be widely promoted across the region. So far, pilot programs using these eco-friendly lamps have already begun in Fuping and Penglai. In particular, Penglai City has installed over 600 solar insecticidal lamps, each covering up to 30 acres of orchards. According to Chen Jianzhuang, head of the Industrialization Section at Penglai’s Agricultural Bureau, the lamps work by attracting insects through their natural phototaxis. During the day, they absorb sunlight, and at night, they emit light to lure pests, which are then trapped and eliminated. This method significantly reduces or even eliminates the need for chemical pesticides, offering a safer and more environmentally friendly solution for fruit farming. This shift not only helps protect consumers but also supports the long-term health of local agriculture. With growing concerns about pesticide residues and environmental impact, the adoption of solar insecticidal lamps marks a promising step forward for Yantai's agricultural sector. The city is setting an example for other regions to follow, showing how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand in modern farming.
