This article continues with the sixth part of our series on the terminology and definitions related to rolling bearings. Understanding these key terms is essential for engineers, technicians, and anyone involved in machinery design or maintenance.
### 6. Torque, Load, and Life
1. **Starting Torque**
The torque required to initiate rotation between one bearing ring or washer and another fixed ring or washer.
2. **Rotational Torque**
The torque needed to prevent movement when one bearing ring or washer is rotating, while the other remains stationary.
3. **Radial Load**
A load acting perpendicular to the axis of the bearing, typically applied to a radial bearing.
4. **Axial Load**
A load acting parallel to the axis of the bearing, commonly found in thrust bearings.
5. **Static Load**
The load applied when the bearing is not rotating, such as in a static or non-moving condition. This applies to both radial and axial directions.
6. **Dynamic Load**
The load experienced by the bearing when it is in motion, whether due to rotational movement or linear sliding.
7. **Equivalent Load**
A calculated value that represents the actual load a bearing experiences under various operating conditions, allowing for accurate life prediction.
8. **Radial (Axial) Basic Static Load Rating**
The maximum load a bearing can withstand without permanent deformation, based on the contact stress between the rolling elements and raceways.
9. **Radial (Axial) Basic Dynamic Load Rating**
The load that a bearing can theoretically endure for a rated life of one million revolutions under dynamic conditions.
10. **Life (for a set of bearings)**
The number of revolutions or hours a bearing can operate before fatigue failure occurs. It is often expressed in terms of reliability.
11. **Reliability (in relation to bearing life)**
The probability that a group of bearings will perform beyond a specified life under identical operating conditions.
12. **Rated Life**
An estimated lifespan of a bearing based on its dynamic load rating, used for predicting service life.
13. **Basic Rated Life**
The life associated with 90% reliability, commonly used in engineering calculations.
14. **Life Factor**
A correction factor used to adjust the equivalent load in order to achieve a specific rated life.
15. **Bearing Block / Plummer Block**
A housing that supports a radial bearing and includes a mounting plate for secure installation.
16. **Vertical Plummer Block Housing**
A type of housing designed to accommodate vertical-mounted rolling bearings.
17. **Flanged Housing**
A housing with a radial flange and screw holes for attaching it to a shaft.
18. **Adapter Sleeve**
A conical sleeve used to mount tapered bore bearings onto a cylindrical shaft.
19. **Withdrawal Sleeve**
A conical sleeve used to remove tapered bearings from a shaft.
20. **Lock Nut**
A nut with an axial groove used to secure a bearing in place, often paired with a lock washer.
21. **Lock Washer**
A thin steel washer with external teeth that locks the nut in place, preventing loosening.
22. **Eccentric Locking Collar**
A grooved ring used to fix the position of an inner ring relative to a shaft.
23. **Concentric Sleeve**
A component used with spherical bearings to align and secure the inner ring on the shaft.
