[Source] Agarwood is derived from the resin-infused heartwood of Aquilaria sinensis (Lour) Gilg, a species belonging to the genus Aquilaria. This tree is native to Southeast Asia and parts of China, particularly Hainan Island.

[Properties] The raw material typically appears in irregular blocks or helmet-like shapes, sometimes in smaller fragments. The texture is solid and woody, with visible chiseling marks. Its color ranges from light brown to dark brown patches or small dots, which are scattered across the surface. On the other side, the surface may show signs of resin exudation, appearing yellowish-brown with an uneven texture, cracks, and small honeycomb-like holes. Under a magnifying glass, the grainy structure is evident, giving a slightly loose feel. When cut, it produces a powdery texture. The wood is generally hard and does not sink in water. It emits a distinctive, aromatic scent with a slight bitterness. When burned, it releases a strong fragrance and smoke, and black oil may ooze out during combustion.

According to the "Compendium of Materia Medica," Aquilaria sinensis possesses strong antibacterial properties. It is regarded as one of the most potent medicines in herbal practice.
