According to those interviewed, effective follow-up supervision is essential to ensure compliance. At the same time, as electric vehicles become heavier and their braking systems are upgraded, the overall cost of production will rise, which is expected to result in higher retail prices.
One electric vehicle dealer in Nanjing openly criticized the new regulations, stating that while the intention behind them was positive, implementation has proven challenging. Under current rules, even high-end electric vehicles like Mercedes-Benz models should be speed-limited, yet many still exceed these limits on the road. The reason, according to the dealer, isn't that these vehicles aren't speed-limited, but rather that manufacturers must meet consumer demand for performance. As a result, some companies may bypass speed restrictions to remain competitive.
The dealer also expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the new regulations if proper oversight is not maintained. "Without strong enforcement, the speed limit will just look good on paper," he said. "It won’t make a real difference on the streets."
Regarding the improved braking system requirements in the new standard, the dealer acknowledged its importance. He pointed out that the current braking technology in many electric vehicles is outdated, often resembling that of bicycles. This can lead to serious safety issues, especially in emergencies when brakes might fail. In contrast, motor vehicle braking systems are more reliable and could significantly reduce accidents caused by poor braking.
However, the dealer also warned that upgrading the braking system and increasing the vehicle's weight will inevitably raise production costs. As a result, electric vehicle prices are likely to go up. This could lead to a surge in purchases of cheaper, non-compliant models before the new regulations take full effect. Consumers might rush to buy older models that don’t meet the new standards, creating a short-term spike in sales of less safe options.
Overall, while the new regulations aim to improve safety and quality, their success depends heavily on strict enforcement and public awareness. Without these, the intended benefits may not be realized, and the market could face unintended consequences.
