The genome-wide sequencing of the wild soybean W05 jointly completed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Huada Gene and other units, through the research on the genes related to the important agricultural traits of wild soybean, discovered a new salt-tolerant gene. On July 10, the latest research results were published online in the journal Nature Communications.

About 6,000 to 9,000 years ago, China began to domesticate wild soybeans. During the domestication process, soybean cultivars lost many important genes related to environmental adaptation. However, this missing genetic diversity can be improved through breeding methods, that is to say, wild soybeans can be adapted to a specific environment. The gene was reintroduced into cultivated soybeans. Researchers conducted genome-wide sequencing of wild soybeans and used a novel and effective research strategy to mine wild soybean genome genetic information. They constructed a sequencing-based genotyping genetic map and used previously re-sequencing data on soybean germplasm resources to discover new salt-tolerant genes that are responsible for maintaining lower sodium ions under salt stress conditions. Potassium ion ratio to enhance the salt tolerance of soybeans.

Salinization poses a serious threat to agriculture, affecting the harvest of 20% of the world's irrigated crops. Under the conditions of salt stress, wild soybeans show high tolerance, so wild soybeans have very good genetic resources for improving the salt tolerance of soybeans. The researchers also found that having complete salt-tolerant gene sequences is a common feature of soybean ancestors, and that different generations of gene mutations accumulate in the offspring of salt-sensitive cultivated soybeans. These mutations result in abnormal or low expression of salt-tolerant genes.

Xie Min, head of BGI, said that the first discovery of the new salt-tolerant genes is related to the salt tolerance of wild soybeans. It is only a start. The release of the W05 genome sequence of wild soybeans will help analyze the good traits of wild soybeans for breeding purposes. And improving experiments provide valuable resources.
