Recently, a 1kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system developed independently by the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successfully generated electricity. This marks a significant step forward in China's efforts to advance clean energy technologies and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.

As one of the most promising fuel cell technologies, SOFCs offer remarkable energy conversion efficiency—up to 55% for direct power generation and as high as 75% when used for combined heat and power (CHP). Their all-solid-state design makes them inherently safer compared to other fuel cell types. Additionally, they are versatile in fuel choice, capable of using not only pure hydrogen but also natural gas, biogas, and other carbon-based fuels that are widely available and cost-effective. This flexibility makes SOFC technology highly attractive for widespread adoption and integration into various energy systems.

The development of SOFC technology is crucial for optimizing China’s energy structure, reducing environmental pollution from conventional thermal power plants, and promoting high-tech industries, especially those involving rare earth materials. Recognizing its strategic importance, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have supported SOFC research since the Ninth Five-Year Plan, with increasing investment over time. The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics has been a key recipient of this support and has made significant progress in SOFC development.

In the "One-Three-Five" Plan of the Institute, SOFC was identified as one of the core research directions. Researchers have overcome several technical challenges, including the mass production of large-area cells, stack integration, thermal cycling stability, and carbon deposition issues when using carbon-based fuels. These breakthroughs have enabled the successful implementation of the first domestically developed 1kW SOFC system.

The system operates without external heating, instead using the combustion of exhaust gases from the fuel cell stack to maintain the necessary operating temperature. It uses natural gas, which is more accessible and economical than hydrogen, after steam reforming to generate electricity. The system has a rated power of 1kW, uses 13x13 cm² single cells, operates at around 750°C, delivers a power density of approximately 0.2 W/cm², and achieves a power generation efficiency of about 35%. When used for combined heat and power, the overall efficiency can reach up to 65%.

While there is still room for improvement in terms of efficiency and durability compared to foreign counterparts, the successful operation of this system demonstrates that China's SOFC technology has advanced into the stage of system development and optimization. Future efforts will focus on localizing electrolyte powders and key materials, achieving mass production of single cells and stacks, and studying degradation mechanisms to improve system longevity. Researchers are also working on refining a 5kW SOFC system and aim to develop distributed SOFC products in the future, further expanding the application of this promising technology.
