High-performance plastic bearings are typically made from self-lubricating modified engineering plastics. The friction coefficient of these bearings plays a critical role in determining their service life and the amount of driving force required for operation. Understanding the factors that influence this coefficient is essential for optimizing performance and reliability.
In addition to material properties, researchers at CSB have discovered that the surface finish of the grinding shaft significantly impacts the friction coefficient. Studies show that smoother surfaces lead to lower friction. When the surface roughness (Ra) of the shaft falls within the range of 0.4 to 0.8 micrometers, the friction coefficient is minimized.
The consistency of the friction coefficient in self-lubricating plastic bearings largely depends on the self-lubricating properties of the materials used. CSB has also found that external factors such as operating load, speed, and ambient temperature can greatly affect the performance of these bearings during operation.
Through extensive testing, CSB engineers observed that certain high-performance plastic bearings, such as CSB-EP and CSB-EP13, exhibit low friction coefficients below 80°C. Newer models like CSB-EP3 and CSB-EP3G maintain low friction even at 130°C. Meanwhile, high-load applications with temperatures up to 160°C still show very low friction coefficients, around 0.11, for bearings like CSB-EP5 and CSB-EP5Z.
From thousands of laboratory experiments, CSB engineers concluded that the friction coefficient of self-lubricating plastic bearings generally decreases with increasing load, increases with higher speeds, and rises with higher operating temperatures.
These findings highlight the importance of material selection, surface treatment, and environmental conditions when designing and using high-performance plastic bearings. By carefully managing these variables, engineers can enhance bearing efficiency, reduce wear, and extend operational life.
