British Airways plans to convert garbage such as plastic food containers into passenger aircraft fuel

HC Plastics News: British Airways announced on the 18th that it will cooperate with other companies to design and build a number of factories, which can convert household waste into aviation fuel for aircraft use, which not only helps to better solve the garbage disposal. The problem is also conducive to greenhouse gas emission reduction.

According to British Airways, they will build these plants in cooperation with a renewable energy company called Velocys. The first factory will be able to recycle a large amount of domestic waste every year, including diapers, plastic food containers and candy wrappers. Process, the factory can extract useful ingredients from these wastes and make fuel for aircraft use.

According to the design, the first factory can produce enough fuel for British Airways' Boeing 787 to operate from London to San Jose, California and New Orleans. British Airways said that the use of fuel produced by the plant would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to conventional fuels. In the next 10 years, the company also plans to gradually increase the use of such fuels in the fleet.

Willie Walsh, CEO of the British Airways parent company International Aviation Group, said that converting household waste into aviation fuel is a great innovation to reduce the need for landfill while producing clean fuel.

According to data provided by British Airways, the UK transports more than 15 million tons of waste each year to landfills.
