On September 7, the 32nd Guangzhou International Furniture Fair officially kicked off. This major event drew participation from well-known exhibitors across China, including key furniture manufacturing regions such as Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shandong, and Beijing. International brands from Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines also joined the exhibition, showcasing their latest designs and innovations. The fair was spread across 13 exhibition halls, divided into four main zones: modern civilian furniture, classic civilian furniture, outdoor furniture, and home accessories and textiles. Leading brands displayed their most advanced products, offering a rich visual feast for visitors. However, despite the impressive lineup, the first day of the exhibition saw a noticeable drop in foot traffic compared to previous events. Many exhibitors and visitors expressed disappointment, noting that the number of attendees was significantly lower than both the spring edition of this year and the same period last year. The once-bustling atmosphere was now replaced with a more subdued environment. "I remember the spring exhibition was very lively, with crowds everywhere. But today's turnout is really disappointing," said Mr. Li, who visited the fair at 11 am. He added that the crowd had at least halved compared to previous sessions. As reporters walked through the exhibition halls, they observed sparse crowds, especially in areas dedicated to classic furniture. In Hall 4 and Hall 5, which featured major classical furniture brands, many booths remained largely unvisited. Mr. Huang, a business manager from Xueyou Furniture, admitted that while the company had high expectations, the current visitor numbers were underwhelming. He hoped the situation would improve in the coming days. Hall 2.2, home to premium brands like Red Apple and Styroland, saw slightly better attendance, but still fell short of previous editions. Even the subway station near the venue, usually crowded after the exhibitions, was unusually quiet, highlighting the overall decline in popularity. Several exhibitors attributed the low turnout to various factors. Mr. Gao, Regional Manager of the Federal Group, pointed out that the timing coincided with the "golden September and silver October" period, during which many dealers were busy with marketing activities and couldn’t attend the fair. Additionally, he noted that product innovation had been lacking in recent years, leading to reduced interest among new dealers and agents. Hu Yixiang, Executive Vice President of Styroland, took a more optimistic view. While acknowledging the lower turnout compared to the spring edition, he believed that the market wasn’t necessarily in trouble. He emphasized that the current audience was more rational, and the products on display were more mature in design and quality. With the housing purchase peak approaching and the wedding season on the horizon, he remained confident about the second half of the year. Some exhibitors were still setting up their booths, contributing to the initial lack of activity. Miss Wu from Castle Furniture explained that the first day was just the start, and the exhibition’s popularity might improve later. Meanwhile, Mr. Huang from Classical Furniture Development pointed out that many export-oriented companies had shifted focus to the domestic market due to economic challenges, reducing foreign orders and affecting the overall attendance. Tianlang Furniture’s Miss Sun added that the simultaneous Dongguan Famous Furniture Exhibition may have drawn some visitors away. Additionally, the rising competition from Southeast Asian manufacturers, with their cost-effective products, has impacted local Chinese firms, leading to a loss of overseas buyers and further declining exhibition popularity. Overall, while the Guangzhou International Furniture Fair faced a challenging start, it remains a significant platform for the industry, and its future performance will likely depend on how well exhibitors adapt to changing market conditions.
