The International Lighting Designers Association (IALD) Annual Awards Conference took place in Las Vegas on June 4, where the Wuhan Han Street Wanda Plaza's "Deep" new media art lighting project was honored with the Excellence Award. This prestigious recognition marks the highest honor for Chinese lighting projects on the global stage.
The IALD Annual Awards are widely regarded as the most prestigious accolades in the field of lighting design, often referred to as the "Oscars" of the industry. Zheng Jianwei, the lead designer of the "Deep" project, is the chief designer at the Lighting Studio of the Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute. He has been recognized as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Young People in China’s Design Industry. His previous work, the "Night Scenery of No.7 Courtyard in Beijing Olympic Center," also earned the top award from the North American Lighting Society in 2009.
In an interview following the award, Zheng highlighted the innovative nature of the "Deep" project. It features 41,000 double-sided luminous spheres, creating 82,000 light pixels that offer a dynamic, three-dimensional visual experience. As the world's first large-scale real 3D new media wall, this project broke new ground in architectural lighting. Unlike many other entries, it did not rely on traditional Chinese elements but instead embraced a modern, forward-thinking design approach. Its success among over 200 competing projects reflects the growing international recognition of China’s creative and technological capabilities in lighting design.
This achievement underscores the increasing influence of Chinese designers on the global stage and highlights the importance of innovation in shaping the future of urban lighting.
