John Fenske, Vice President of Marketing for Access Control Products at HID Global, emphasized that relying on outdated infrastructure, legacy technologies, and traditional thinking will hinder organizations from keeping up with rapid technological advancements. This makes it increasingly difficult to address the growing complexity of modern security threats. According to a recent HID Global survey, there's a clear need for businesses to modernize their access control systems. The survey highlights the importance of adapting to new technologies, following industry best practices, and leveraging next-generation features—such as mobile access via smartphones—to enhance security and convenience. The survey reveals some concerning trends in current security practices: - Only 37% of users conduct annual security assessments, and most do not involve third-party experts to evaluate their existing access control systems. This means many organizations aren’t performing internal audits, conducting employee training on security threats, or testing their systems at all. - Over 50% of respondents didn’t upgrade their systems last year, and more than 20% haven’t upgraded in the past three years. - Despite known vulnerabilities, 75% of end users still consider password-protected cards important. Additionally, most believe magnetic stripe and proximity cards are sufficient for security, even though these can be easily cloned. - While 75% of respondents recognize the importance of advanced security technology, only half have actually implemented it. Moreover, over 90% believe security policies are critical, but only 70% feel they’re effectively enforced. A major barrier to adopting best practices is the lack of perceived ROI. As the Bonimon Institute notes, the cost of not investing in proper security measures can be extremely high—like a data breach that costs $5.4 million. HID Global believes that the current mindset around access control will shape the adoption of future technologies. For instance, mobile access through smartphones offers a more convenient and secure experience, allowing users to store all credentials in one secure device that’s less likely to be lost or forgotten. However, if the market continues to rely on outdated methods like traditional cards and readers, it will face significant challenges when transitioning to more intelligent, self-contained devices in an environment full of evolving threats.
