The International Lighting Designers Association (IALD) Annual Awards took place in Las Vegas on June 4, where the Wuhan Han Street Wanda Plaza's "Deep" lighting new media art project was honored with the Excellence Award. This prestigious recognition marks the highest accolade for Chinese lighting projects on the global stage. The IALD Annual Awards are widely regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in lighting design, often referred to as the "Oscars" of the industry. Zheng Jianwei, the lead designer of the "Deep" project, is a senior lighting designer at the Beijing Architectural Design and Research Institute. He has been recognized as one of China's Top Ten Outstanding Young People in the design sector. His previous work, the "Night Scenery of No.7 Courtyard in Beijing Olympic Center," won the top award from the North American Lighting Society in 2009, showcasing his international reputation. In an interview following the award, Zheng shared insights into the project. "Deep" features 41,000 double-sided illuminated spheres, creating 82,000 light pixels that produce a true 3D visual effect. It is the first large-scale real 3D new media wall in the world. Unlike many other projects that rely on traditional Chinese elements, this one was designed with a modern, innovative approach. Its success in a competitive field of over 200 entries highlights the growing influence and creativity of Chinese designers on the global stage. This award not only celebrates the technical brilliance of the project but also reflects the increasing recognition of China’s contributions to the global lighting design community. As more Chinese architects and designers push boundaries with original ideas, the world is beginning to take notice.
