John Fenske, Vice President of Marketing for Access Control Products at HID Global, stated, “Relying on outdated infrastructure, old technologies, and traditional thinking will make it hard to keep up with today’s rapid technological advancements. This leaves organizations vulnerable in the face of increasingly complex threats. The survey highlights a clear need for businesses to modernize their access control systems. They must evolve alongside the threat landscape, follow industry best practices, leverage next-generation technologies, and adopt mobile access solutions via smartphones.” The HID Global survey reveals key security vulnerabilities and their financial impact: - Only 37% of users conduct annual security assessments, and most do not engage third-party experts to test their access control systems. This means many organizations skip internal audits, fail to train employees on security risks, or neglect system testing altogether. - Over 50% of respondents did not upgrade their systems last year, and more than 20% haven’t updated them in three years. - Despite the risks, 75% of users consider password-protected cards essential. However, many still rely on magnetic stripe and proximity cards—technologies that are easily cloned and pose significant security risks. - While 75% of users recognize the importance of advanced security tech, only half have implemented these solutions effectively or at all. Additionally, over 90% believe strong security policies are crucial, but only 70% feel they’re being enforced properly. The main barrier to adopting best practices is budget constraints and a lack of perceived ROI from management. According to the Bonimon Institute, the cost of neglecting proper security measures can be staggering—like a data breach that caused a $5.4 million loss. HID Global believes that current perceptions of access control will shape future technology adoption. Mobile access via smartphones offers a more convenient and secure experience, allowing users to store all credentials in one safe, portable device. However, if the market continues to rely on outdated methods like traditional cards and readers, it may struggle to adapt to the evolving threat landscape and integrate smart, self-contained devices. A virtual credential on a smartphone could be the solution, but only if organizations prioritize modernization. You can view or download HID Global’s access control information map here.
