However, these mixtures are prone to nutrient loss, especially nitrogen. To minimize nitrogen loss, it is recommended to cover or mix these adsorbent materials directly into the excrement, allowing them to absorb urine and ammonia more effectively. According to experimental results, adding 25% dry fine soil to human waste can reduce nitrogen loss by approximately 10%.
Adding superphosphate to human excreta is another effective method. By incorporating 3% to 5% superphosphate into the waste, not only is nitrogen loss reduced, but the overall nutrient content, particularly phosphorus, is also improved. This makes the final product more valuable as a fertilizer.
Another option is to add ferrous sulfate. For every 50 kilograms of human excreta, adding 250 to 300 grams of ferrous sulfate helps protect nitrogen and also reduces odors, making the composting process more manageable and less unpleasant.
